After seeing the Topsy Turvy hanging tomatoes gadget on TV during April I started thinking about getting some of those for this summer.
As I considered the idea I started coming up with other things I might be able to grow like that -- i.e. HANGING. As a result, I have come up with a grand scheme to "build" a hanging vegetable garden with 5 gallon plastic paint buckets and a rope to hang them from.
The first step was to hang a rope between the two porch support posts and the tree in the back yard.
The next step was to drill 2-inch holes in the sides and bottom of each bucket.
Then, with a little help from my friend John, we filled the buckets half full of garden soil.
With dirt in the buckets and the buckets hung it was time to start planting.
This page will evolve as the hanging vegetable garden does, and I will post pictures of every step of the way so you can see (with me) if this concept truly works this summer.
Here are a few pictures from the 2 week mark.
Here are a few pictures from the 4 week mark.
Here is the hanging garden's new location in the sun at at 6 weeks.
I'm losing track of time, but I think we're at 8 weeks now. There has been some significant "thinnning of the herd", with some things not surviving and others thriving. Even so, I actually have 4 tomatoes and a couple of green beans now !
